2:00 pm  Spoken Word Interactive Presentation and Performances

This interactive presentation, given by Dr. Terrence Elliott, jazz musician and Dean of Applied Sciences at Contra Costa College, focuses on the history of hip hop and its influence on Spoken Word. Spoken Word, the explosion of poetry in its many forms has ignited the creativity and power of people across the globe.  From local coffee houses and forums to festivals and theatre venues the “word” and its pulsating beats and power have rewritten and redefined our notions, concepts, and precepts of performance and theatre.  Most importantly, it has captured the imagination of young folk.  How do we as theatre artists and presenters embrace and provide “real space” for exploration, production and performance?  

Meet and Greet for 24 Hour Play Festival Creative Team at San Diego State University's Experimental Theater

The Producer, playwrights, directors, all cast and crew meet for the first time as a team to begin the 24 hour play process.

7:00 pm  Spoken Word Night!

Hosted by Joe Hernandez-Kolski, who previously appeared on HBO's Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam, will host the evening's festivities. Includes scheduled performances, open mic and Poetry Slam!!!!

Theatre, performance, spoken word, fine and graphic arts can be a powerful illumination of social inequities in our society.  How can we as artists, arts presenters and social activists use our art to not only shed light on society’s ills but provide a pathway to problem- solving and healing?

What role should theater take for communities of color?

Many theatres of Color were conceived and launched in the midst of the turbulent 1960’s. Through growth, urban renewal, a number of them, not all, have grown beyond their original missions and neighborhoods and as a result community ties have been strained or broken.  How can these ties be re-established, and how can the use of technology play an important role in strengthening the relationships.

2:00 PM -- One Day Only - Workshop on

Lessons in Moving The Crowd: How To Stay True, Get Paid AND Do Good: by Rha Goddess

This workshop is designed for artists/activists who are really trying to figure out personal sustainability.  World-renowned artist/activist Rha Goddess will provide a  basic introduction to Move The Crowd and the philosophy of True-Paid-Good.   She will focus on the core attributes necessary for being able to do what you love, earn what you desire and make a difference in the world.  Participants look very squarely at vision-mission-purpose alignment, core strengths, and strategic goal setting and achievement.
